Introduction & Context
Refrigeration load calculation is a fundamental process engineering task required to determine the thermal energy removal rate necessary to maintain a specific environment at a target temperature, and it is especially critical when performing a refrigeration load calculation for storage facilities. By accurately quantifying the heat ingress from transmission, product cooling, air infiltration, and internal equipment, engineers can properly size refrigeration compressors, evaporators, and condensers to ensure system efficiency, product integrity, and regulatory compliance.
Methodology & Formulas
The total refrigeration load is the sum of four primary heat gain components. The following formulas define the steady-state heat balance for a cold storage room:
1. Transmission Load: Heat transfer through the building envelope due to the temperature gradient between the ambient environment and the refrigerated space.
\[ Q_{\text{trans}} = U \cdot A \cdot \left( T_{\text{ambient}} - T_{\text{room}} \right) \]2. Product Load: Sensible heat removed from goods entering the storage space, including the respiration heat load of fresh produce. For already frozen products, only the sensible heat capacity is considered.
\[ Q_{\text{prod}} = \frac{ m_{\text{day}} \cdot c_{p,\text{prod}} \cdot \left( T_{\text{prod,in}} - T_{\text{room}} \right) }{ t_{\text{day}} } \]3. Air Change Load: Sensible heat gain resulting from the infiltration of warmer ambient air during door openings or structural leakage. This formula accounts for dry‑air sensible heat only; when the infiltrating air carries significant moisture, the latent load from condensation or frost must be added using the enthalpy difference method.
\[ Q_{\text{air}} = \frac{ V \cdot N \cdot \rho_{\text{air}} \cdot c_{p,\text{air}} \cdot \left( T_{\text{ambient}} - T_{\text{room}} \right) }{ 3600 } \]4. Internal Load: The sum of heat dissipated by equipment, lighting, and occupants within the space.
\[ Q_{\text{int}} = \sum P_{\text{equipment}} \]5. Total Load: The aggregate cooling capacity required.
\[ Q_{\text{total}} = Q_{\text{trans}} + Q_{\text{prod}} + Q_{\text{air}} + Q_{\text{int}} \]| Parameter | Condition/Regime | Validity Bound |

| Air Change Rate (\(N\)) | Infiltration Intensity | \(0.1 \le N \le 2.0\ \text{ACH}\) |
| Temperature Gradient | Thermal Driving Force | \(T_{\text{ambient}} - T_{\text{room}} > 0\) |
| Product Temperature | Thermal Equilibrium | \(T_{\text{prod,in}} \ge T_{\text{room}}\) |
