Introduction & Context

Flux decline diagnosis is a critical diagnostic procedure in process engineering for membrane‑based separation systems, including Ultrafiltration (UF), Microfiltration (MF), and Reverse Osmosis (RO); for a complementary analysis of water quality issues, see our high permeate conductivity diagnosis guide.

Understanding the root cause of this decline is essential for optimizing cleaning cycles, determining the necessity of chemical cleaning (CIP), and assessing membrane integrity. This calculation methodology allows engineers to quantify the specific contributions of reversible and irreversible resistances, enabling data-driven decisions regarding process maintenance and operational setpoints.

Methodology & Formulas

The diagnosis relies on the resistance-in-series model, which relates the permeate flux to the transmembrane pressure and the sum of individual resistances within the system. The following formulas define the physical state of the membrane:

1. Temperature-Dependent Viscosity Correction:

\[ \mu_{T} = \mu_{20} \cdot 1.02^{(20 - T)} \]

2. Flux Conversion to SI Units:

\[ J_{SI} = J_{LMH} \cdot \left( \frac{1}{3600 \cdot 1000} \right) \]

3. Resistance Calculations:

The total resistance is derived from the transmembrane pressure (\(\Delta P\)) and the permeate flux (\(J\)):

\[ R_{total} = \frac{\Delta P}{\mu_{T} \cdot J} \]

Where the baseline membrane resistance (\(R_{m}\)) is determined using pure water flux, and process resistances are calculated using the operating flux (\(J_{proc}\)) and post-flush flux (\(J_{wf}\)):

\[ R_{m} = \frac{\Delta P}{\mu_{T} \cdot J_{w0}} \] \[ R_{total,proc} = \frac{\Delta P}{\mu_{T} \cdot J_{proc}} \] \[ R_{total,flush} = \frac{\Delta P}{\mu_{T} \cdot J_{wf}} \]

4. Fouling Component Decomposition:

The total resistance is partitioned into reversible concentration polarization (\(R_{cp}\)) and irreversible fouling (\(R_{f}\)):

\[ R_{f} = \max(R_{total,flush} - R_{m}, 0) \] \[ R_{cp} = \max(R_{total,proc} - R_{total,flush}, 0) \]
