Power is the rate at which energy is transferred or converted. In the International System of Units (SI), the base unit of power is the watt (W), defined as one joule per second (\(1\,\text{W}=1\,\text{J}\,\text{s}^{-1}\)).
For larger-scale applications—such as industrial machinery, electric vehicles, or building HVAC systems—we use the kilowatt (kW). One kilowatt equals one thousand watts:

Typical household appliances: a 1.5 kW electric heater, a 0.75 kW LED lamp.

Because the conversion factor is a simple multiple of 1000, moving between the two units is straightforward—multiply kilowatts by 1000 to obtain watts, or divide watts by 1000 to obtain kilowatts.

Convert 10 kW to watts.
Identify the conversion factor: \(1\,\text{kW}=1000\,\text{W}\).
kW measures instantaneous power (rate of energy use). kWh measures energy consumed over time (power multiplied by hours). For example, a 2 kW heater running for 3 hours uses 2 kW × 3 h = 6 kWh of energy.
Divide the watt value by 1000. For a motor rated at 250,000 W, the calculation is \(250{,}000\,\text{W} \div 1000 = 250\,\text{kW}\). This simplifies equipment selection and aligns with utility billing that is often expressed in kW.
