Understanding Megajoules (MJ) and British Thermal Units (BTU)

The Megajoule (MJ) and the British Thermal Unit (BTU) are both units of energy or work. They measure the same physical quantity but belong to different measurement systems. The MJ is part of the International System of Units (SI), while the BTU is a traditional Imperial unit still widely used in the United States and the United Kingdom, especially in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.

One Megajoule is defined as one million joules, where one joule is the energy transferred when a force of one newton acts over a distance of one meter. In practical terms, MJ is used to express large-scale energy quantities, such as the energy content of fuels (e.g., natural gas, coal, biomass) or the electrical output of power plants. The British Thermal Unit is originally defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. BTU is commonly used in the United States to rate heating and cooling equipment, such as furnaces, air conditioners, and heat pumps. A typical window air conditioner might have a cooling capacity of 5,000–12,000 BTU per hour.
