Understanding Dynamic Viscosity Units

Dynamic viscosity, also known as absolute viscosity, measures a fluid's internal resistance to flow when subjected to an external force. In engineering, two common units used to quantify this property are the Centipoise (cP) and the Pound per foot-second (lb/(ft·s)).

  • Centipoise (cP): A CGS (centimeter-gram-second) unit commonly used in industrial chemistry and fluid mechanics. It is defined as one-hundredth of a Poise. Water at 20°C has a viscosity of approximately 1 cP.
  • Pound per foot-second (lb/(ft·s)): A unit derived from the English Engineering system. It is frequently utilized in legacy mechanical engineering specifications and thermal-hydraulic calculations in the United States.
